With A Net Worth Of $40 Million And A Stake In A Billion-Dollar Company, They're Still Struggling. Dave Ramsey Says, 'This Is Just Asinine'

A caller named Ashley from Columbus, Ohio recently joined 'The Ramsey Show' with Dave Ramsey and Jade Warshaw to share a financial dilemma that, on the surface, shouldn't exist. Ashley and her husband have an estimated net worth of $40 million. Of that, $30 million is tied up in her husband's stake in a private company valued close to $1 billion. Despite this, their financial advisor suggested taking out a home equity loan on their fully paid-off vacation house. Locked Wealth, Limited Control Ashley explained that while the couple appears wealthy on paper, their money isn't liquid. Her husband's ownership stake doesn't allow them to redeem shares freely. 'He's one of the owners in the business,' she said, 'but he is not on the board of directors, so he doesn't get to make the decision on when redemptions can be made.' Don't Miss: The same firms that backed Uber, Venmo and eBay are investing in this pre-IPO company disrupting a $1.8T market — 'Scrolling To UBI' — Deloitte's #1 fastest-growing software company allows users to earn money on their phones. You can That $30 million may look impressive, but it's effectively locked away. And as Ashley discovered, the board has no plans to make shareholder liquidity a priority. "It was told to me, crystal clear, no questions asked, we will never prioritize shareholder redemptions over the growth of the company," she said. Ramsey was straightforward. 'There's no possible way that borrowing on your lake house is a good idea when you have $40 million,' he told her. 'This is just asinine.' The remaining $10 million in their portfolio includes about $4 million in retirement accounts. Her husband also brings in about $400,000 annually on commission. Still, the family had grown used to spending far beyond that—at one point withdrawing $1 to $1.5 million per year from the business. Trending: Kevin O'Leary Says Real Estate's Been a Smart Bet for 200 Years — Ashley said that lifestyle included two homes, paid staff, private flights, yacht charters, a horse farm, and support for an ex-wife. "We spent money assuming that we were going to be redeeming shares," she admitted. "You know, chartering yachts and flying private—that'll happen real fast.' 'Now I'm getting there,' Ramsey responded dryly. Ashley said she only recently took control of their finances after realizing how unsustainable things had become. Ramsey made it clear the couple's main issue wasn't a lack of money—it was control and discipline. "You have $30 million tied up in something you have absolutely no control over. That is not okay," he Ashley mentioned they might have to divest entirely, Ramsey didn't hesitate: 'Absolutely. Because you are going to lose your butt.' He encouraged her to sell shares, even if it means paying taxes, in order to regain financial freedom. 'I'm going to pay some taxes and get free of these jerkwads. No chance I'm putting up with that crap,' he said. As for the financial advisor who suggested a loan on their lake house? Ramsey didn't hold back: "You may need a new financial advisor, too. This one's an idiot." Read Next: Shaquille O'Neal Wants People to Take Heart Health Seriously — Up Next: Transform your trading with Benzinga Edge's one-of-a-kind market trade ideas and tools. Tyree Wilson shows promise in training camp, aims to prove worth as Raiders' seventh pick

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — NFL teams that draft a player seventh usually expect that prospect to make an immediate impact. They count on it. But Tyree Wilson, as he enter his third season with the Raiders, he is still trying to prove himself. Maybe this is the season he proves why Las Vegas used such a high pick on him, and Wilson has shown in training camp that he could be poised to take a big step forward. 'The whole camp, he's been doing a solid job,' coach Pete Carroll said. 'We've called on him in a number of ways to keep going and keep pushing. We're really trying to make sure that we put him in the right spots that take advantage of his skills and in his comfort and so that he can play at his best.' That includes playing Wilson defensive end or tackle. He was drafted as an edge rusher after making seven sacks each of his final two seasons at Texas Tech, but also has been used inside not only in Las Vegas but in college. 'It's the quickest path to the quarterback being inside,' Wilson said. "You go through the guard, the quarterback is really going to be standing right there.' Wilson has been playing catch-up since the Raiders drafted him. A foot injury in his final season at Texas Tech forced him to sit out of organized team activities and minicamp, and Wilson didn't get onto the practice field until well into training camp. The result? Wilson didn't record a sack his rookie until Week 7 against Chicago. He wound up making 3 1/2 by season's end, but no one was mistaking his pass rushing abilities for teammate Maxx Crosby. Wilson showed a little more promise last season in making 4 1/2 sacks, but the fact he has remained on the second team in practices is telling. He isn't on the trajectory previously expected, but that doesn't mean Wilson can't change the narrative. The 6-foot-5, 263-pound player has taken advantage of the opportunities he has received in camp. 'I feel like I'm way faster, way more fluid than I have been before, and it's going to continue to get better,' Wilson said. As Wilson has progressed and shown flashes, another defensive end is still trying to find his way. Malcolm Koonce ended the 2023 season with six sacks in his final four games and looked poised to form a strong pass-rushing duo with Crosby when 2024 rolled around. But a torn ACL in last year's camp took Koonce out of the season, and he used the offseason practices to get back into form. It remains an ongoing effort for Koonce, who signed a one-year, $12 million prove-it contract in March. 'He missed so much in the offseason that he was disappointed in," Carroll said. 'It's been three, four weeks we've been out here, and I think it took him time to realize he's OK and he's in great shape. It's often with injuries, particularly lower-leg injuries in knees and ankles, you got to believe that it's OK, and sometimes you have to prove it.' Which is where Wilson also finds himself. He appears relaxed and confident, and no doubt his positive practice performances help. But until he does it consistently in the season, Wilson will be a big draft miss. Maybe this season will be a different story. 'He's working hard,' linebacker Elandon Roberts said. 'He does some very good things inside and on the outside. And, man, that guy is really long, so his extension and just being able to get off blocks and affect not just in the pass game but the run game, you really see it.' ___ AP NFL:

Steelers CB Jalen Ramsey gets ridiculous penalty on sloppy opening drive

The Pittsburgh Steelers have rested most of their top defenders for the first two games of the preseason. But on Thursday night against the Carolina Panthers, head coach Mike Tomlin inexplicably decided to trot out several starters for their first action of the season. One of those defensive starters is cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Unfortunately, Ramsey's debut with the Steelers wasn't what the fans had hoped for. Ramsey got a little overzealous as they came up to make a play on Panthers running back Trevor Etienne. Ramsey initially made a great play, holding Etienne to a three-yard loss. However, Ramsey took it too far and ended up getting flagged for unnecessary roughness and turning a three-yard loss into a 15-yard penalty. Carolina went down the field and ended up getting a field goal on the drive to take the early lead. The Steelers made a trade with the Miami Dolphins to bring Ramsey to the team. Pittsburgh then gave Ramsey a 4-year, $84,700,000 contract. The Steelers have placed high expectations on Ramsey to lead this secondary and get this defense over the playoff hump.
